The Christmas period results in additional pressures on parents and in particular if the relationship has broken down or separation is being considered. Family Mediation NI urge parents who have made the decision to separate to seek help with negotiating their way through this emotional mind field, even if they are separating and remaining in the family home due to the economic downturn. Family mediation can help assist with a new way of communicating, planning for the future as separated parents and most importantly communicating with their children and supporting them at this difficult time.

Do not criticise each other in front of the child.

Give each child and young person loving permission to love the other parent.

Have age appropriate conversations with your children, separation or divorce does not mean goodbye to one parent.

Do not use your child as the ‘messenger’ to communicate with the other parent.

Allow this respect and tolerance for the “other” part of your child’s life to stretch to extended family involvement

Do make sure children both know that they are not in any way responsible for what happened and they are not responsible for your well being. You are.

Do remember children are not possessions to be fought over. They need and have the right to the love and protection of both parents.

We are co-sponsoring an important event next month with our friends at Legal-Island. “The Northern Ireland Mediation Symposium” is a full day event designed to bring together all those in Northern Ireland with an interest in mediation.

There is plenty in the programme for family mediators. The Justice Minister will be giving his view on mediation in the opening address followed by a review of the current uptake of mediation in NI. There’s also a skills session to be delivered by Ewan Malcolm who is a highly experienced mediator and renown international speaker.

In the afternoon there are special parallel sessions allowing you to pursue your own specific interests in family, legal, employment or political conflict mediation.

This event promises to be a great day. We do hope you can attend.

Family Mediation NI is delighted to launch their redesigned website. Conscious that nowadays a website is the new ‘shop front’, Joan Davis FMNI Director is very pleased with the new design, provided by ‘Gravity’. ‘We hope the general public find it easy to navigate and find out more about mediation and how it can help separating couples in particular resolve issues and develop new ways of communicating post separation that will help them and their children adjust to the new situation’. The website is inviting and user friendly to encourage the public and other professionals to find out what FMNI has to offer.

Communication is often limited, fraught with tension or indeed non-existent following relationship breakdown, an impartial mediator in a neutral, safe environment offers an opportunity to separated parents to begin communicating, with the children as the focus of that communication.
Parents are assisted to work towards building an agreement on residency, access, maintenance, what to tell the children, finance, practical issues and/or anything else that is relevant to the couple. Depending on the age if the child, parents are encouraged to give a voice to the child, so that their feelings and concerns are included in the process, with parental consent. Those with other family disputes are also welcome to contact us and hopefully we can be of assistance.
